Here’s an FDA report on a Romain lettuce E. coli outbreak that resulted in 5 deaths. There’s a couple of ways E. coli can get from cow intestines to lettuce: cow manure gets into irrigation canals/streams, and a downstream farm uses that to water their crops; manure used for fertilizer is not properly treated; cows get into farm fields that they shouldn’t be in. Lettuce is particularly susceptible because it is often eaten raw.
The cows kill count would go up even more if you count air/water pollution and food borne illnesses caused by their manure on produce

5·10 months agoAgreed, a lot of the time I’m in need of a super charger, there’s a line to use it. The demand is there and it’s not like EV owners can easily switch back to gas

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you be aware of major issues in the world and locally without becoming deeply depressed and cynical?
3·1 year agoAgreed! I get this with my Unitarian Universalist church community. UUs don’t require anyone to believe a certain scripture, but we have a shared set of principles, like valuing democracy, science, and nature. The community aspect and music program are great by themselves, and our minister’s sermons have been a great source of motivation to keep fighting for what we believe in.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What would it mean for the world if the US were to transform itself from the usual democracy-like plutocracy into an outright dictatorship? Would anything change at all?
82·1 year agoDepends on your demographics a bit. Dictatorships like to scapegoat ethnic minorities or other out groups (see Pinochet’s, Mao’s, Pol Pot’s, etc extermination of scientists and educators) for society’s problems. These groups of people tend to experience much greater intensity of oppression under dictatorships than already present in the US. This tends to change culture on a fundamental level because most people actively try to fit in with the in group to avoid becoming a target themselves.
While present to some degree in our current system, another core characteristic of dictatorships is that self enrichment for those in power is the primary driving factor for decision making. Dictators don’t need to pay lip service to making decisions for the greater good. You see this especially prominently in dictatorships in developing countries with valuable resources… The dictators and their close friends take all of the wealth from resource extraction for themselves and everyone else lives in extreme poverty. Yes we have wealth inequality already, but it would be accelerated even more. You could see even highly skilled professionals having a hard time making ends meet (or in jail for being too smart and having “ideas”), and even more homelessness, potentially even wide scale famine.
In terms of geopolitics… Our relationship with allies would become about how the relationship personally benefits those in power.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you deal with depression about climate change?
5·1 year agoFocus on progress that has been made, solutions to the climate crisis have been growing exponentially over the past decade. And it’s not a binary issue of everything is sunshine and rainbows vs we’re all fucked. There’s more of a spectrum. Also remember the past environmental successes we’ve had with like acid rain, the ozone layer, leaded gas, mercury pollution. We’ve come a long way.
Making any progress, no matter how small makes the future just that much better than it otherwise would be. Yes, systemic changes out of the control of anyone on Lemmy are needed, but if say every person on Lemmy worked towards reducing their own environmental impacts that could have huge ripple effects in the economy of the green transition. Just plan out pragmatically/realistically how much time, mental energy, and resources are worth it to you.
A lot things that individuals can do to help with the climate crisis often also have personal benefits like long term financial savings, less pollution exposure, healthier plant-based diets, etc.

World News@lemmy.ml•Is Natural Gas a Fossil Fuel Trap or a Bridge to Clean Energy?
9·1 year agoPaywalled, but I’m gonna go with fossil fuel trap. We need to be completely off fossil fuels by about 2050. Any new major natural gas infrastructure being built now is expected to last longer than 2050. Even new residential gas furnaces are probably expected to last around 20 years or so.

As another commenter alluded to, inflicting trauma and depression on perceived enemies is an intentional tactic of oppressors. Therefore any moments of joy are acts of resistance against oppression. Depression is a valid response, but it isn’t always helpful to yourself or others. So trying to find ways to cope can improve your situation.
Two things I find helpful for coping are being in community with people who share my values and volunteering to try to improve my corner of the world. I find both of these things through my Unitarian Universalist church. There’s no expectation to believe any specific scripture, just a shared set of values. The first principle being all humans have inherent worth and dignity. Our congregation has people who identify as atheist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, several types of pagan, etc. Our music program is also a big bonus. Find a congregation near you, they can vary based on the local membership and many stream services so you can check out the vibe before going in person.
