the 100kb u save from the right use flags is nullified by the hundreds of mb needed to have the entire build tool chain on your system. there are dedicated distros for embedded systems that are much better suited. like alpine Linux. or LFS. (IIRC with LFS u can get the entire system installed 2 or 3 MB)

sounds like you might need to run reflector, and then update all packages
I used Gentoo for a few years. I don’t recommend it at all!
first off, there are no tangible advantages. it’s not faster. it is more customizable (by use flags), but the only tangible advantage of those is bragging rights saying you kept a certain library off your system and saved 100kb. just enabling all features is more practical.
there are tangible disadvantages. a big system upgrade can take days. and often fails. and, the manual time you spend merging config files with dispatch-config is large.
I switched from Gentoo to debian after 3y of using Gentoo. i switched from debian to arch after about 10y later. been on arch for about 6y now. would not recommend Gentoo
I had a similar problem some time ago. in my case the nvme drive was overheating and stopped working. led to full system freezes…

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is there a simple GUI application alerting the user when a process is not running?
4·2 months agoYeah, autocorrect isn’t great with technical terms. I meant systemd. I followed Arch’s instruction, and just enabled the services via
systemctl --user enable syncthing.service

10·2 months agoi use syncthing, and start it via the systems service. i found it reliable. systems has a feature by which you can get notified on error (look up the onerror key), you might be able to do what u need with that.
alternately, you can run a systemd timer that runs periodically and notifies you when your condition is met. if u want a pop-up, use zenity etc.
lol. never created a slashdot account…
i switched right after win95 🙂

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•how did you make the switch from reddit to lemmy.. i'm trying to myself but struggling to ngl
44·2 months agojust deleted my account and all reddit apps. quit cold turkey. there’s less on Lemmy. but I’m happier, and more productive 🙂
I heard two talks around 2001 or so. one by Wolfram, after which I swore never to use mathematica again. and one by stallman after which I switched completely to Linux and never went back to windows.
still on Linux 25y later. went from days when getting sound working was a challenge , to today when even obscure tablets work out of the box.
started with red hat. used Gentoo for about 5y. then debian for 10, and now arch.
went from the old “crux” and metacity, to openbox to fvwm to gnome to kde plasma
i remember the old days I was envious of Mac users for transparency and the present windows features, and I ran this utility called Skippy that would screenshot windows and present them… all these features are now built in to the wm now, so no tweaking needed
honestly on single user machines I uninstall a display manager. autologin on console, and put a few lines in my zshrc to start my wm automatically

World News@lemmy.ml•Here’s the full text of Trump’s 20-point plan to end Israel’s war on Gaza
69·2 months agoi don’t follow? the idiots I knew thought they were so important that declaring their non support for Biden/Harris would magically stop the genocide.
I never got a straight answer to the question “what if trump wins? will that be better for Gaza”
there is no way Biden or Harris would have approved the 20 point genocidal plan in the article. this is what they voted for. where are they now?
i hope they vote in midterms…
honestly idk why people say the arch install is hard. it takes 30mins max. instructions are fantastic.

in my defense, Gentoo was harder to install than arch…

i think ur talking about the Linux console. don’t bother customizing that. install kde or whatever gui u use. then open the terminal (e. g. konsole or gnome-terminal). ur zoom shortcuts should work out of the box now.
too bad u switched already. u were one command away from having the gui
