Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Why the fuck does it cost money to get smarter??
7·2 months agoThere are all sorts of classes available at top schools via opencourseware. You can take the highest tier courses that the US has to offer, and become educated. While not degree offering, it still would look great on a CV, if you can somehow prove you did the work.
Free books. A few years ago, I read a free electrical engineering book available on the internet, which I found fascinating. It has been a little helpful in practice as well, but I think it’s just cool to know how capacitors and motors work. Public libraries exist for a reason. Gutenberg is another option.
Many 2 year community colleges are now free tuition if you reside in the state.
And of course, there are still ways to get a degree cheap, if the paper is important to you. I finally landed at WGU 15 years ago and it was very reasonable, and has paid dividends on my original investment.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•people who use AI a lot would probably be the most likely to get their exact wish from a genie.
10·2 months agoSadly no, it’s going to be the junior people who are replaced because they lack tribal knowledge. Offshore will decrease as well. It’s already happening.

Technology@lemmy.world•The Evidence That AI Is Destroying Jobs For Young People Just Got Stronger
2·3 months agoYes, I do, because we are many and we persevere.
Here we are celebrating Labor Day, the day that celebrates workers rights - overtime pay for working over 40 hours, limiting children from having to work in factories, weekends and time off.
It was a hard fight from serfdom to poor factory conditions to now. We stand on the shoulders of giants.

Technology@lemmy.world•The Evidence That AI Is Destroying Jobs For Young People Just Got Stronger
441·3 months agoThere’s a growing wisdom gap coming in America. The people who are already well versed in company practices and culture are going to use AI to complete the tasks that they would have otherwise given to assistants and junior resources.
The junior resources are going to struggle to find jobs because they are lacking in the KSAs that schools simply cannot provide training for. And that means when us Gen Xers and later Millenials retire there could be a major gap where we have few people with that inherent knowledge to replace us. And where there’s no work and no hope, you get something akin to what is starting to occur in China right now…or revolt.
My hope is that schools will be rethought and there will be a lot more focus on getting an internship early and for the long term. Something more like apprenticeships, which the blue collar workforce maintained, but it’s something we’ll likely need to bring back to white collar jobs.
This isn’t to say that schools should diminish a well rounded education. I think it’s extremely important for students to take electives outside of their focus for a multitude of reasons, one being that it helps students realize the importance of how others contribute to society.
Apprenticeships can help to fill the knowledge gap, but the white collars that are in the jobs now will also need to be retrained and made comfortable to work with a large influx of apprentices to make this approach a success.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What movie did you see too young that still haunts you to this day?
2·4 months agoYou know those movies as a young kid that you watch over and over? This was mine. From like 7 to 12 I would have these recurring dreams of a school with a flag in front and then going the stairs into a basement. I wondered where the hell it was coming from, then I watched the intro to the movie again in my 20s.

New Communities@lemmy.world•Mars - everything about the planet mars
8·4 months agoHow deep would you like to go?
- There was a rare large cloud in the atmosphere just a few weeks ago.
- They found minerals that can only be made by a sea of water just the other day.
- There are structures on Mars that resemble river deltas.
- The largest mountains on Mars like to have frosted tips in the winter
- A few years ago during the summer, a dark suspicious liquid was leaking from the dunes near the equator
- There are suspicions that Earthen life originated from a Martian meteorite.
- Twice per epoch, when the Earth, Mars, Phobos and Deimos align, Cthulhu wakes from his slumber deep within the bowels of Valles Marineris, and with him, the undead arise to lay waste to the land. This is why in the Ancient Roman texts, Mars is the God of War and Destruction.

Window units are not that expensive. Unless landlord is a slumlord, if you say you’re gonna leave if said landlord doesn’t fork up for a window unit, they’ll probably do it. Evicting someone and getting a new tenant is much more of a hassle.

I’m much more a fan of the PBS/NPR underwriting model. Tell me who deliberately funds the show or video.
When the advertisement is so divorced from the show, is not relevant to the conversation or is not relevant to me, then the andvertisers are wasting their money.
If you show me the same ad over and over again, I am actually more likely to NOT buy that branded product or service because I’ve become so annoyed and numb from the ad taking what little time I have on this planet that I will actively boycott it.
However, I do have a nice space mug from PBS, a plot of land on Mars, the moon and Scotland, and a t-shirt for the Truth podcast to prove that I will spend money when the advertising is relevant to the content I’m consuming. So if you want the ad to work, invest your dollars directly into the content and providers I care about.
But for the love of everything, do not think for a moment that your contribution gives you license to control their messaging or content.
