I understand this to an extent, but not the post competition behavior.
I was a runner in secondary school. You’re taught to push through pain and discomfort to reach the finish. If 24 year old me shat myself whilst participating in the Olympics, I can imagine possibly panicking and deciding to continue. You have to make instantaneous decisions with unwavering followthrough whilst competing as second guessing can make the difference between ranking first or third. You don’t overthink, just decide, execute, and move forward.
I cannot imagine bragging about it later on social media. I’d be mortified. Hell, I AM mortified for her.

Shame and embarrassment work in strange ways and everyone is different. She’s clearly very goal-directed and a very capable athlete. I can’t imagine all the extremes of emotion she had to feel with the backlash that followed.
