He was very much the Elon Musk of his times, and it’s very possible he would have gone down the same route of extremist views and decisions that completely failed because of his egoism.

Some interesting points, and some things I disagree with.

Firstly it’s annoying he keeps calling it his idea and trying to enforce this concept that the current internet needs to align with his original goals. That’s stupid and ignores that things will go where they go, he can’t control them.

So his first point about centralisation being an issue isn’t that big a grievance. But his second point rings true - the issues around our data and advertising have grown significantly and the Web is getting much worse as a result.

I actually think the solution is just government needs to step in and regulate it, along the lines of what the EU is doing. Realistically I think that’s the only solution that’ll help. Doing some grassroots movement and hoping it picks up steam is just unrealistic. Like looking at Lemmy and Mastadon - they’re great but at this pace they’ll never take over the other giants in the space. You need someone to step in and force the change.

People are missing the forest for the trees but you are right.

If Republicans force this through on every bill then at some point it would have to pass. You can’t just shut down the US government indefinitely in the real world.

Sync didn’t use ro have ads (or maybe I was blocking them successfully) but now it does. So will try something else as fuck ads.

I’m curious, do you use this on mobile or are you talking about a desktop experience?

Personally I find more ads on something like Sync on mobile than I did on Reddit which I can block, but I am now forced to use the Reddit desktop site.

I actually don’t disagree with you and think we’re on the same page. Basically, you can summarise our whole discussion as all companies are doomed to fail at end of day.

If you don’t change and innovate you will fail.

If you change and innovate too much you will fail.

Finding the middle ground is rough and most companies will fail.

Anecdotally sure, but for the majority of people I’d be right. And that’s what matters - at a small level you’ll have outliers but if you’re winning the majority of the market then you will crush your competitors. Again it’s irrelevant whether your code is good or efficient or replaced by llms so long as you are winning long enough to kill your competition.

I’d wager you say no to all of them. So while the old may be right, it’s irrelevant because they were still outperformed and no longer exist or are just not as competitive.

Yep. This is the old school way of thinking that leads to things being shitty and not improving. “Why change if it’s not broke?” Cue Uber, Google, Netflix any tech company that replaced the old guards.

It’s surprisingly easy to live without any subscription. I don’t have any. If you’re tech savvy you can either block most ads that subscriptions give you, or bypass the service entirely and get free premium or just dl videos/music etc.

And as the services get worse there’s little incentive to actually keep a subscription. Netflix is becoming pretty dogshit for example.

I buy the cheapest coffee beans I can from supermarket, and have had coffee snobs comment how much they love the coffee I make and where I buy it from.

Just because you don’t like or understand something doesn’t mean it’s not a job. I think it’s a bit ridiculous myself but at end of day it’s no different to being a celebrity for whatever reason and it’s still a job.

But there’s nothing inherently wrong about it, your views are just judgemental. May also just be a cultural thing to be fair, or as societies attitude towards sex become more open, older views may still just be very conservative.

While this is abhorrent, I have to say in general Firefox is just painfully slow on mobile compared to other browsers. Don’t know what it’s doing but I stopped using it because it’s noticeably slow.

I did speed comparisons and it was just terribly slow.

Plus I hated the functionality of opening up every single new url in a new tab. That was enough for me to give up on it to be honest, so frustrating and no options to change.

Agree its privacy is debatable, but it’s still better than Chrome. Can at least block all ads.

I tried Firefox but it was hot garbage on Android.

Ended up going with Kiwi - same extension support but just better designed and much faster. Firefox kinda sucks on mobile beyond ublock origin support.

This is probably true for big games, but I wouldn’t get angry at any small developer for not supporting Linux. It’s just not worth it/still such a small base.
