Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How old should my lemm.ee account be to be able to upload photos in posts?
9·8 months agoImage uploads are enabled 4 weeks after account creation, & image upload limit is 500kb per image.
Source is instance sidebar, but if you’re using an app that’s gonna be found in a variety of places. In Voyager for example it’s under Communities>3 dot menu in the upper right>Instance sidebar.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Mastodon cultural question - when should we use Favorite?
12·8 months agoWhenever you like, honestly. It’s mostly a nice acknowledgment to the poster that you appreciated their post. Unlike commercial social media it’s not sending out anything to your followers that you interacted with it (at least last I checked).
I think many people boost more than favorite because it functions a little similarly in regards to acknowledgment, with the bonus that it helps share the post to others which is even more relevant in federated networks than on centralized platforms.
In other words, vibe coders are today’s technologically accelerated script kiddie.
That’s arguably worse as the produced scripts may largely work and come with even less demand for understanding than a script kid’s cobbling together of code may have demanded.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•A digital desktop toy shredder/incinerator for writing out and promptly destroying one's thoughts would be nice some days
1·9 months agoHuh, that’s cool! Thanks!
p.s. I meant a digital widget/thing, but it’s cool to know this tool exists!

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•[RESOLVED] Looking for simple self-hosted image editor / resizer appEnglish
8·9 months agoWas thinking the same and you can.
Minimal fucking around needed too, just pkg install imagemagick then navigate filesystem to images ya want to adjust and magick however desired to reduce the file size.

memes@lemmy.world•At least they make them easy to identify/avoid...
8·9 months agoMy problem with them is this and YouTube’s aggressive pushing of them in general and in the wrong places, like any device with a horizontal display (like when using a PC/laptop).
In my opinion vertical videos are better viewed on a vertical display (like a phone) and nowhere else, because everywhere else they look worse. Now that I’m thinking more of this though…I should see if any shmup people are showing off via shorts, 'cause that’d be a good fit.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I think this is going to be unpopular :(
7·9 months agoYou may want to be a little clearer. Are you after a mix of the old style Reddit interface alongside what RES added?
If so I can’t remember what RES added, but I gather it’s enough that the old style frontend may still feel lacking and the others aren’t scratching that itch either.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Best thing you can do for genuinely free stuff is share it with others and talk it up
2·9 months agoPretty much, yeah. Buried by marketing and mostly kept that way by it dominating conversations.
Been occasionally posting creative commons music and some fully free games to try to be the change I want to see.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you cope with the amount of shit that goes on in the world?
61·9 months agoTry to learn more, focus on creative/constructive approaches or outlets (not necessarily artistic in nature, but may be).
Sometimes I’ll read into history for something or other and find myself mildly amused and sort of relieved to see how familiar the accounts are. Of course it would be better if they weren’t so familiar, but it goes to show things aren’t freshly awful. It’s a lot of the same old garbage we’ve yet to effectively deal with, same as ever, but we have been dealing with it.
In other words, I try to take steps to regain perspective to recognize there’s as much, if not at times more, good to experience than bad, and even if I struggle to find much good, I can try to make my own sort of good to keep myself going.

memes@lemmy.world•Is it a rule that fan theories have to be so dark?
5·10 months agoIt’s arguably layers of this cover behavior, and mostly as you say because it’s fun. The first layer, closer reading and fan theorizing, is covering why they’re into children’s media or some other media that isn’t seen as fitting them.
The second layer is entwined with the first, the fan theorizing is itself covering what some are too insecure to say or do outright, which is make fan fiction. Some may look down on making fan fiction in similar ways as they feel looked down on for what they’re enjoying, making it somewhat ironic.
In short, don’t let your fan theories remain theories, make fan fiction and your own independent, inspired work!

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•”Ask Lemmy” should rebrand as “Lemmy Ask the Internet”
21·11 months agoIf there were more people across these sites, I’d definitely appreciate the Ask communities being moderated more toward their intentions, like strictly open-ended questions, and treat all questions as not being stupid for those respective communities.
However with only so many people, too heavy moderation can deter any activity, so it’s kinda tricky. 🤔

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is there any cool communites in the Threadverse for Gen-Z?
4·11 months agoI’d say post this sort of thing to any of the chat/discussion communities across instances.
!general@lemmy.world is open for it.
!casualconversation@lemm.ee is open for it too.
!chat@beehaw.org is likely open for it.
There’s plenty more but those are a few to start with. You may not get many responses due to fewer people and fewer among those in the same age range, but you may also be pleasantly surprised. Regardless, that’s an easier route than trying to start up a community from scratch.
Btw instead of inviting people over, you may also try sharing stuff from around here with links you think your friends might enjoy. Once they see there’s stuff of interest, that may be more of a draw than an invite to Yet Another App alone.

Technology@lemmy.world•LG discontinues all UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray playersEnglish
12·1 year agoStreaming isn’t the middle ground in my opinion, rather it’s unrestricted downloadable files that you can then handle however. Streaming provides some convenience but no consistent access (see various shows being delisted or shuffled between services).
Companies would love if everyone forgot having home video, in the sense of owning copies of movies and shows they always have access to and ability to watch whenever.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Almost all software can be a video game if you find something interesting or fun about it
2·1 year agoFor a light, simplistic open source editor that’s easy to get into, Goxel has been my go-to. I’d liken it to a voxel sketchpad with how easy it is to load up and simply mess about with.
For a more robust open source editor that’s kinda rough around the edges, there’s VengiVoxEdit, which I’ve honestly only scratched the surface of personally.
For a similarly robust editor that’s less rough around the edges, the standard recommendation is MagicaVoxel. It’s a solid choice, but I’m not sure if the developer is continuing work on it or not, which makes a difference here as it’s not open source. It still works fine right now though, so if you’re on Windows/Mac, it’s a good option for a smooth, feature rich editor.

RIP, take my wheels away, I wiped out on the wheelie!
