General limit yes, but make it 150 for now. It’s easier to get people on board with a higher limit and lowering the limit will also encounter less resistance down the road (haha).

2·8 months agoFor now, most of the ad bullshit can be turned off. Though it turned back on after the latest software update and forced me to spend another 10 minutes digging through the horrendous settings menu.

I cut the piezoelectric speaker off of mine. It now doesn’t make any beeping noises, which is nice.
I take the 25 cents per step, thank you very much. Being paid for going on long walks with my girlfriend and friends? That sounds nice.
But week 4 will start with a bang.

Technology@lemmy.ml•China’s hypersonic jet shatters Mach 6.5 speed in Gobi desert test
14·1 year agoTheir high speed train network is impressive, but none of it was new technology when they built it. The first train sets they bought were Siemens Velaro D, a mature high speed train system that has been around in Europe for almost a decade prior.
It ISN’T cost effective, but in China that doesn’t matter: what the state wants the state gets. No matter the cost. And I’m willing to bet that in 10 years time a lot of the stuff just doesn’t work anymore, line speeds get reduced and stops cancelled due to infrastructure not being maintained.
We have seen chinese prestige projects fall into disrepair time and again, and their extensive transport network will see the same fate.
Do you remember a time where the receipt had the name of the store, the time and date of the purchase, an itemized list of what you bought, and the tax you paid and nothing else?
Nowadays there’s also a transaction id, a qr code, a coupon for your next purchase, a quote of the day, a novel, and some ads printed on there. My last order of french fries came with a piece of paper that is longer than my forearm. Ikea spits out half a metre of thermal paper when I order 2 hot dogs. Whyyyu?
A typical office keeb is around $15. If you can build this for anywhere close to $150 I’m gonna take 2, please!

292·1 year agoAmerican (and european) car makers can’t fill that market need due to higher labour costs and stricter environmental laws.
Also the fact that the chinese government heavily subsidizes electric auto makers skews the market in favour of the chinese manufacturers.
They might keep driving, but some infotainment features (or even other features that are tied to subscriptions) might stop working.
Depending on the implementation of these features that could mean the car constantly shows error messages, or the infotainment freezes, or in the worst case the car won’t even start or charge.
Some of these concerns are true for newer cars of traditional manufacturers: what happens when their online services become unavailable?
