Older OSes did that, but modern ones usually just do the equivalent of format /q in DOS (write new filesystem metadata only, don’t check for bad sectors)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Are there any legal issues recreating YouTube SponsorBlock for Podcasts?
2·2 years agoIt should be possible to detect non-ads by downloading different versions of the audio file and checking which sections are identical, but you’d need some way of detecting transitions between sections.
If the ads use a voice actor who doesn’t talk on the podcast, maybe you could try to detect that.

1·2 years agoThe problem with that is that comments that are removed by moderators behave the same way - that might actually cause legal problems if someone posts something that you’re obligated to remove instead of just hiding it

4·2 years agoThat has nothing to do with federation - I can still read deleted comments that other users of my instance posted in local communities
It might actually be more efficient than keeping cyrogenic hydrogen cooled if the mission takes multiple decades and you don’t need the fuel most of the time - for example in a Pluto orbiter
It should always cause a syntax error if the code contains

There’s also a Firefox extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/foxy-gestures/
In the least bad case, they encrypt the password instead of hashing it, making it possible to decrypt the password.
In the most common case, they store the password in plaintext, so there isn’t even any encryption to be reversed.

Technology@beehaw.org•Automakers can’t quit manual transmissions so they’re cramming fake stuff into EVsEnglish
6·3 years agoIn a manual and EVs, when you take your foot off the brake, nothing happens.
That depends on the car’s software - my mother’s Renault Zoe slowly accelerates to about 5 km/h if you take your foot off the brake.

1·3 years agoU+202E and U+202C are control characters that change the direction of the text (see also https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/1137:_RTL)
In order to be able to type them, you can use HTML entities: https://www.w3schools.com/charsets/ref_utf_symbols.asp
You can write any Unicode character like that, for example
&becomes a.

For each number, I mark all cells where I know I can’t put it.
If one block, column or row has only one possible cell where a number can be, I put it there and then update all cells where I now know I can’t put it anymore.
This algorithm probably isn’t the fastest, but it’s easy to do manually and it has the advantage that you don’t need to backtrack.
For a long time, it used to be Square Root of Minus Garfield - I actually got my username from there.
Nowadays, it’s probably xkcd.
