32·2 months agoMy phone had all of that, and I can place it in a convenient location to watch while I cook. My fridge is beside or behind me as I cook.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•what did your parents wanna name you if you were the opposite gender?
5·3 months agoEmily if I had been a girl, and that wouldn’t have been so bad.
Had I been twin boys though… Tharan and Thurlow. WTF??

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Does the average american, when naming a price of any given item, takes into account taxes or disregards it?
1·4 months agoWould you support an individualized pricing system if it meant that disadvantaged individuals could afford a better quality of life that is subsidized by charging wealthy people more?
You’re not from around here, are you, pardner?
??? Nothing about what I said was a dichotomy of any kind. Where did I exclude the possibility to create something else?
All I did was use this situation to illustrate why crypto has value today.
This is why some of us love crypto currencies so much despite the hate it gets from so many who claim there is no intrinsic value, it’s a scam, etc.
Stay away from shit coins, no doubt, but the intrinsic value is that you can side step all of the bullshit and spend your money as you choose. No need to get permission first. It’s looking to be a much better path forward, and payment processors inserting their own rules will only drive more acceptance of alternative payment methods.

22·6 months agoIf the lobbyists have money to pay bribes, then they have money to pay taxes. It doesn’t seem like a stretch for the government to get that money without all of the coercion.

131·6 months agoThe crazy thing (to me) is that governments can still get all of those billions without the undue influence. Instead of bribes, they can charge fines, taxes, fees for regulatory inspections, etc. When you write the law, you don’t have to just shrug when things are obviously broken.
I would like to see a lot less of it

Technology@lemmy.world•Klarna Hiring Back Human Help After Going All-In on AIEnglish
11·7 months agoI don’t even know what Klarna does and don’t care to look it up. They bought an app that I used to use for managing loyalty cards. Before Klarna bought them, the app would pop the loyalty card into my notifications as soon as I entered the store. When is time to check out the card was right there waiting for me.
After Klarna bought them, the convenient auto-notification went away. Then you’d load up the app and it takes you to a default home page with “Try X”, “Special discount on Y, this week only” posted everywhere and none of it related to the store I’m in. The loyalty cards were buried somewhere I had to go find.
So I deleted the app and just use Google Wallet for my loyalty cards. Still no convenient auto notification with the card for the store I’m in, but Wallet is ready enough to get to and isn’t plastered with ads.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What laws, is any, does this break?
4·7 months agoAre you on a single party state? If so you can record any meeting/conversation that you’re a part of.
The keyboard icon always in the system tray may have been an accessibility setting. I honestly don’t remember anymore.
I use Mint on a Surface tablet with detachable keyboard. When I detach the keyboard no virtual one appears automatically, which I prefer. If I need a keyboard there is a quick menubar icon that brings one up. I cant remember if it loaded itself there by default or if I went into settings to make the virtual keyboard icon always in the status bar, but that’s how I manage it.

Being the “low cost Mac” is very different from being the cheapest option.
Though I’ll say that my one Mac purchase in the early 00’s was a few years after they switched to OSX and I bought a Macbook Pro for probably 60%+ more than the equivalent PC but it lasted me over 2X as long as any PC ever had prior. Plus the free OS upgrades that were unheard of on Windows machines at the time.
