Yes. Cooperatives = co-ops. Let the workers (and possibly users) elect management and what to invest profits into.

Easy. Nationalize social media and turn them into democratic cooperatives with the mandate to enforce strict moderation on hate speech.
Oh is that the bastard administrator from hell?

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•i truly believe that there's an open war between Humanity vs. Advertisers and their allies.
8·7 months agoI feel the same. Besides what you mentioned, there is also the effect on what news and content will be produced and shown (see Manufacturing Consent). The advertisers who are the customers of shows want the viewers in a buying mood. So while “if it bleeds it leads” works fine but controversial topics that disturbs people or make them think will not be shown.
Best example is youtube - once the demonetization came there must have been significant effects on what topics were discussed and how. Without sponsorings and patreon it would be worse, but this or rule is shaping our global civilization for the worse.
People pay far too much attention to ideology, but it’s the rules of a system that lead it to converge to different outcomes. And advertising is a big one.
Sorry don’t know, I only see it in the settings of the default webUI

World News@lemmy.ml•Is war on China coming? The US military is seriously preparing [Geopolitical Economy Report]
111·7 months agoThe US will not allow them to take Taiwan, too much at stake. Doubtful we’ll initiate.
But the US already did since Biden. They named Taiwan an “important strategic military partner” which goes much further. Basically the US is putting it’s finger on the map halfway around the world right in front of China’s doorstep and saying “this is ours” while China says it is theirs. Obviously Taiwan DID belong to greater China and even though I don’t especially support reunification it’s a slap in the face. Instead of letting sleeping dogs lie.
It’s always the press and people portraying the US has not doing anything but inviting countries into their military alliance. It’s dangerous warmongering. Yes, and the same happened in Ukraine.
I can see the opinions after another proxy war breaks out, oh those evil Chinese devils / yellow orcs! Appeasement doesn’t work, they want to gobble up all the world like Hitler!
Hopefully China is smarter or the USA collapses before that can happen.

7·7 months agoReading the headline I thought this would be about something space related, like unfolding solar sails.
You can actually select what languages you want to see in settings. Which is a step up from reddit. Only weird thing is you ALSO have to select “undetermined” language besides English and whatever else.

World News@lemmy.ml•China has the world’s first operational thorium nuclear reactor
31·8 months agoYeah I guess the fundamental problem is the scalability because building automated battery factories that automate manufacturing isn’t easy.

World News@lemmy.ml•China has the world’s first operational thorium nuclear reactor
3·8 months agoWait, thorium reactors can be build small enough to fit in shipping containers? That would be incredible. I know they are now working on SMR reactors with helium as coolant that are very safe because nothing is under extreme pressure and explode even if there is a meltdown.
Reading on wiki it seems there is a SMR with thorium fuel cycle, butEDIT: Copenhagen atomics really is building a thorium molten salt reactor that is safe from meltdown!

World News@lemmy.ml•China has the world’s first operational thorium nuclear reactor
12·8 months agoI’d love to know the cost of thorium reactors vs some experimental grid level battery technology with solar or wind. Like liquid metal batteries made out of dirt cheap materials, or liquid flow batteries. I’m pro nuclear, but it’s weird that there hasn’t been much progress in scalable cheap grid storage.

World News@lemmy.ml•US officials admit they ran the Ukraine war, and risked a worse one [Aaron Maté]
82·8 months agoIt’s sort of surprising that this article gets so much backlash, since it’s just a rehash of the NYT article with a more critical analysis of the historical facts. And those facts aren’t even really something new - at least it was all suspected, now a bit more confirmed, or something the mainstream would see as problematic.
But I guess they can’t attack the facts presented by the venerable NYT so they take it out on the “far left” and “fringe” Aaron Mate.
At this point, I just want to see China arming Panama or Mexico or Venezuela to the hilt with modern weaponry, missiles and drones, and then when the USA invades them helps with constant logistics and satellite information of “points of interests”. We’ll see how the whole mainstream would defend this because they just had to liberate the poor people oppressed by those regimes there. That would be the equivalent to what the US, Nato and EU have been doing. Although I doubt China has any interest in such funny games.

3·8 months agoIt seems you can run the full R1 on a 96GB ram gaming rig even without GPU. I have little practical experience because of my old PC but it seems both improvements to efficiency to run locally (at least for a group of people) and research about bias or poisoning is being done.

6·8 months agoAt least it’s open source and you can run it locally, and it’s more energy efficient. Give credit where credit is due. A truly independent AI group could simply fork and review it. And contrary to fascist talking points not all Chinese Researchers bow to the CCP.

91·8 months agoYes there is: Paradox of tolerance - Wikipedia. Fascist speech is fascist recruitment using lies. If you tolerate intolerant speech, soon you will no longer have tolerance. So if you want tolerance you must not tolerate speech that is meant to increase intolerance.
All dissent from the political correct opinion spectrum needs to be squashed. Only way to defeat veganism once and for all!

51·8 months agoWell who doesn’t once they get older haha. But I seriously wish I wouldn’t have had a laptop or smartphone with keyboard and typed everything I learned as a question / answer flashcard. So I can review them. Some kind of flow inducing learning environment. Of course everyone learns differently, but I imagine there are huge gains possible with software and learning courses with current technology.

5·8 months agoYou wish you would have been home schooled?
To be honest I’m disappointed we haven’t seen more progress into “VR schools” yet. Where you are fully submerged into a learning experience. While your blood is constantly analyzed and drugs to increase concentration and energy levels are dispensed. Ok maybe not the last part.

World News@lemmy.ml•Trump raises China tariffs to 125% but announces 90-day pause for others
2·8 months agoEspecially since the USA can’t do anything to coordinate the response of their industry, having fired their people and only relying on the market to sort it out. While China could systematically and rapidly invest in any industries and goods from the USA that now face retaliation tariffs in China or EU.

Divide and conquer. Non state-actors and special interest have a far easier time attacking a hundred small entities than one big one. Because people have much less bandwidth to track all this shit than it is to spread it around. See ALEC and the strategy behind state rights.
In the end this is about economic power. The only way to curb it is through a democratic government. Lemmy servers too can be bought and sold and the communities captured that grew on them.
