Technology@lemmy.world•The Big Short Guy Just Bet $1 Billion That the AI Bubble PopsEnglish
1·30 days agoA short is not only a bet on a direction but also a timing issue. You need to know roughly how long (time) to keep the option.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•how do you explain selfhosting to the non-techies in your life?English
1·1 month agoI have long suspected that its a techies responsibility to take care of their immediate friends and family in regards to self hosting. SoiI usually offer that service for free to my extended family. I usually tell them they have to rely/trust someone, might as well be me and if it weren’t them I would charge customers X money for that service monthly. So it becomes a gift and something personal and they feel taken care of and when the dreaded “help me with my email” call comes you just pop open their account without trying all the password on that crusty sticky note and look into it. I especially love those “they claim they didn’t get that email” calls. Pop open the log and send the excerpt of their server accepting the email to the claimant and boom number one of all the standard excuses is done for. I once saved my mums job that way.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Why the fuck does it cost money to get smarter??
1·2 months agoICE =“inter city express”, its the German high speed rail and in fact private transportation. But you can use the regional rail network in all of Germany for free. Non students pay 58€ per month for that privilege.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Why the fuck does it cost money to get smarter??
11·2 months ago*in the US. In Germany a semester at my university costs about 300 Euros and that includes cheaper lunch and a ticket to use all public transport in the whole of Germany.
Watched it till the end. Its a rightwing call to protest the woke agenda and resist the plandemic. Trash.

Technology@lemmy.world•Are Cars Just Becoming Giant Smartphones on Wheels?English
7·3 months agoIt has wheels so the computer doesn’t touch the ground you know.
I use sogo for that. Includes a web interface as well as proper authentication mechanisms and sync integration. Is also lightweight and even allows LDAP integration oif you like.
Also caldav support for tasks and events as well as carddav for contacts. Also allows connections to any email account for sharing calendar events and being invited via email.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Having the ability to lie and manipulate with no remorse will get you much further in this world than having morals and being correct
2·5 months agoWorking in cooperations is the definition of insanity. Been there, it’s crazy. And yes, there the lying and cheating part is most likely to get you ahead.

52·5 months agoBusiness owner here, even if not a very good one. These kinds of CEOs exist, but there are far from the norm. And they usually act that way because the owners of the company expect them to lead that way. There is a crowd mechanic of many people owning some of the stock of a company. It leads to some psychopathy as nobody feels responsible and everybody wants to earn some extra Money. Look into a documentary called “cooperation”.
Most business people, especially the more successful ones are the classic boys club people. They get good deals by being friends and knowing people that give them access. It leads to a culture where what you earn has more or less nothing to so with what or how good you work. If you know the show billions, watch it and look for the making of episodes. There is a lot of real world experience in the writing.

Technology@lemmy.world•We need to stop pretending AI is intelligentEnglish
103·5 months agoI think most people tend to overlook the most obvious advantages and are overly focused on what is supposed to be and marketed as.
No need to think how to feed a thing into google to get a decent starting point for reading. No finding the correct terminology before finding the thing you are looking for. Just ask like you would ask a knowledgeable individual and you get an overview of what you wanted to ask in the first place.
Discuss a little to get the options and then start reading and researching the everliving shit out of them to confirm all the details.

3·7 months agoFascists are weird little guys. There is a podcast about that, it’s true.

But it is. Heat is nothing but very fast Brownian motion of particles. So the kind of very warm light touch comes from fast moving particles in a gas emanating from your cup of Joe and touching your upper lip.
