I treat these people like those who think the Earth is flat. Ordinary foreigners may not be actively followed by someone nowadays. But things like heavy censorship, starvation in certain recent situations, travelling restrictions, they may never experience them in their own country their whole life. Nor did their parents experienced something far, far worse. Those who live to tell the story maybe lucky or unlucky. They never have to tell those things only privately.

1·11 months agoIt really puzzles me that many people in this thread that don’t know to what degrees an authoritarian country censors their dada, never lived in one, and can’t read their language, somehow think giving your personal information to that one is better. Being able to discuss such things is already a privilege. If your bag has to be searched twice a day just to be able to commute, I thought you will at least feel uncomfortable.

2·11 months agoI have to admit, you are right. If there is nothing been stuffed into their minds, most people really don’t know what to do with themselves, just like Montag’s wife from Fahrenheit 451. But there are differences between actively seek something you interested in than going blank and let the algorithms do the job for you. I thought people in Fediserse mostly against the idea of the latter. Otherwise, you will go to Tiktok or something.

137·11 months agoI’ve seen people scrolling on it their whole time on public transportations on materials worse than the worst of TV commercials, like they were in a trance. I know people who using it for at lease an hour every day before bed, and admitting they don’t know what they get from it, just boredom. From what I know, it’s like brainwashing for people who don’t know what to do with their lives.
Glorious whiskers!

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Which video game did you bounce off of at first, but then tried again later for it to become one of your favorites of all time?
8·2 years agoStardew Valley. I don’t know why I didn’t get it the first time. Maybe it was the art style? Now it becomes my daily routine…

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What temperature do you keep your thermostat at?
1·2 years agoMy area also has high humidity, 12°C is indeed freezing. We add lots of layers…

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What temperature do you keep your thermostat at?
1·2 years agoActually no. When it’s that hot, I leave it on from afternoon / evening till before sleep. It was a couple of hours.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What temperature do you keep your thermostat at?
3·2 years agoWhen it’s 40℃ outside, I set my AC to around 30 too.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What temperature do you keep your thermostat at?
5·2 years agoTo save energy, I set my AC at 28℃ in the summer, for a couple of hours in the afternoon. In the winter if my room temperature wasn’t below 8℃ I don’t use heating. Otherwise I set it to 12℃.
Apparently I don’t understand the very energy consuming 20℃ summers/winters.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the stupidest rule your school ever enforced?English
29·2 years agoIt’s not enforced by my schools, but when I was little, speaking local languages at school was forbidden. It’s getting better now, but at that time, only the official language was allowed.
Another rule was boys weren’t allowed to wear longer hairs. If the hairline was below the ears, they would be asked to cut it shorter. From time to time, boys from my class were forced to cut their hair during classes with the company of a teacher.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•People from the "hotter" regions, how do you deal with the heat?

It’s not always, but from where I live (a place beside the sea), humidity is always high, and we had multiple days of 40 degrees last year.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•People from the "hotter" regions, how do you deal with the heat?English
7·2 years agoBut it’s either this or hospital. Human body can’t cool down in very hot and high humidity environments, for example 40 degrees and 90% humidity. My mother was sent to hospital due to heat stroke, AC is life-saving. It would be better if there were better ways.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is a technology/gadget you refuse to use and why?
1·2 years agoWrong post.
That was the case. She lost my trust since I was very young. But fortunately I have a great father, who is intelligent and caring. I often feel sorry for him to have to live with my mother. On the bright side, their relationship seems get better in the resent years. Maybe time did heal.
