Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Is the Steam Deck still worth it in 2025? I'd argue yes — but with caveatsEnglish
10·5 months agoI pretty much always consider games through the lens of my Steam Deck. If it’s a cross-platform game that would run well on the Deck, then I get it for the Deck.
And this is primarily because I can freely install those games to other PCs. If my Nintendo Switch were to get destroyed, then I lose my games with it (outside of emulation, of course). I don’t want games being so temporary. I still play games that are nearing 50 years old!

67·5 months agoAnd if you buy a game on PC, it doesn’t stop being playable in a generation or two like consoles.
You shouldn’t feel shame. You’re just part of the club now. It seems to me that borking your system using a terminal is just a right of passage

Technology@lemmy.world•AI is doing job interviews now—but candidates say they'd rather risk staying unemployed than talk to another robotEnglish
9·5 months agoLet’s not absolve HR from their hand in this process. They’re the ones that setup ATSs based on keywords they don’t understand, and they’re the ones that do initial contact and interviews, in general anyway.
I’ve worked at quite a few organizations at this point in my life, and only rarely did a hiring manager get more say than a choice among the pre-selected pool that HR provided. When that wasn’t the case for me, it was because the company or organization was too small to have a full team handling HR stuff. Once it was the company’s accountant (sweet lady though).
You’re not wrong, but HR doesn’t really add much to this process when the people with the experience and understanding to choose better employees don’t get to participate until a second round.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Junk Store 2.0 has releasedEnglish
3·5 months agoThanks for that. I’m not a Discord user, so I hadn’t seen that. It’s not a total reversal of their previous position, but that is a little different. They didn’t say they’re definitely going to stop the open source plugin, but that is certainly not a commitment to it either.
I would say that open source means anyone is free to fork their work and continue on with it if they can’t. They’re trying to make a living like anyone else, and they’re trying to be self employed. The reality of that situation is that most of their decisions need to be through the lens of how they feed and clothe themselves.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Junk Store 2.0 has releasedEnglish
73·6 months agoI guess I’ll be the black sheep here.
I like Junk Store. I’ve had a better experience with the Decky Loader plugin than I have had with Heroic, namely Heroic made it difficult to login to my accounts and refused to stay logged in. I’m not criticizing Heroic, and I’m appreciative of it as an open source project. Perhaps those issues have even been resolved since I last used it. At the time though, I wanted to stop logging into my accounts each time I wanted to see my libraries, so I gave Junk Store a chance.
I still use it, and I just decided to try out this new version. I’ve been using Linux since the late 90s, and it’s been my primary OS on all my systems since 2008. I’m no longer accustomed to paying for a lot of software (games aside), but doing so will help keep the free (and open source) Decky Loader version going for everyone.
I understand not liking subscriptions, and $40 is a bit high, but keep in mind it’s optional. The plugin version remains and will remain free according to the husband and wife team behind Junk Store. They’re very easy people to talk to if you need anything at all, and they have a passion for what they’re doing. I think it’s super shitty to call them greedy because they’re offering a paid option alongside the free one.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Is the Steam Deck getting outdated soon? Should I wait for the next gen?English
2·7 months agoThe deck is now 3 years old, so it’s not all that future proof. I expect to see a successor sometime in the next 2-3 years or whenever it makes sense for Valve to upgrade it without losing battery life.
I’m on my second Deck (LCD sold for an OLED), and I honestly couldn’t be much happier. I feel like the base models are one hellava good buy even still.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Is the Steam Deck getting outdated soon? Should I wait for the next gen?English
2·7 months agoI pretty much only use my Deck for older/simpler/indie games. I tried Ghost of Tsushima, and I definitely couldn’t enjoy it at the performance and detail level the Deck is capable of. However, streaming it from my PS5 is still a pretty great experience. That said, it still looks better on a 4K screen.
Best estimate that I’ve been about to find on Steam Deck sales is somewhere between 4-6 million, which considering everything is astounding. I’m on my second Deck (upgraded to OLED).
I actually decided to sit out the Switch 2 launch because I’m so satisfied with the Deck (and a lack of groundbreaking Nintendo games at launch).

3·7 months agoYou must be one of those “good employees” that gives employees like me a bad name

The moment I needed Microsoft’s permission to use my computer after installing a graphics card, I made an image of the drive, wiped it and installed a Linux distribution. That was 2008, and I’ve been a very happy computer user since.
I know not everyone can make that switch, but it’s easier than ever before, and Valve has really changed the calculus with Proton. Gaming was the biggest thing holding back Linux adoption (IMO).
