I just love MiG’s. Why? Because the ruskies just rawdogged everything. They saw the F16 with all that fancy fly by wire stuff and made a nimble MiG without any real computer assisted flying with the fulcrum. You have the fastest plane with the SR-71? Well fuck that, here , we’ve put an after burner on that MiG-31 so big it more or less matches the SR-71 speed. It just burns through the engine in one flight and the airframe also takes a big hit when you use it but who cares about costs, we’re commies.

Soviet aerospace engineers man. You just have to love them. They really used that hammer logic (hit it harder!) on everything.

Or the approach which led to the hind heli. What? You need a gunship and you need a troop transport? What do you say, the Americans have pinpoint precision on that superCobra and that shiny Apache thingy?

Here, i’ve made it big so it can fit a lot of troops. I’ve added some large wings so you can fill her up with all kinds of low tech Rockets so you don’t need pinpoint precision. Just point and click in the general direction and everything over there is annihilated. Yeah, that goes for that tank and that family of twelve 100m further down the street where you didn’t aim at as well.

But, they aren’t us anyway so… And next to that the fucker is really fast for such a big helo…

The design principles are so fantasticly wack. Matching (try to) western computertech with low tech solutions.

  • Not him but:

Risk of rain (returns) Hades 1/2 Nebulous fleet command Star sector Homeworld 1, cataclysm (emergence), 2 Battletech (!!!) Spaz 1 (not 2!) Mechwarrior 2 Mechwarrior 5 mercs/clans Terraria FTL Steamworld games (all) Cortex command (interesting pile of shit) Kerbal Etc… So much.

More or less mainstream games: Helldivers2 (!!!) Xcom (ufo: enemy unknown) Xcom Xcom 2 Civilisation Etc…

With Games, like with all art, it’s impossible to point to 1 or two which are the best. I’ve read many books, watched many films, series, plays, listened to music and played a lot of games… i can’t just pick one or two which where “the best”. I can name a bunch which where great though.

  • Tried it twice. Couldn’t get a dog from the shelter. Why? We weren’t married. (?) The both of us worked 4 days. We had a child.

So we shrugged it off, waved and snuggled with the sad doggies and never came back.

And we just bought a puppy. No rules. No problems. Now, 20+ years later we’re on to our third very happy dog.

Anyway: a lot of shelters do their best to scare people away. And they succeed.

  • Yeah, sure.

You sound like one of those people who are the reason why we find the following warning on microwave ovens:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY TO DRY PETS IN THIS DEVICE.

    And on plastic bags:

WARNING: DO NOT PLACE OVER HEAD.

We both know that this is not what it’s for. And it (model S) has never been cleared ANYWHERE ON THIS GLOBE as an autonomous vehicle.

(Adaptive with lane assist and collision detection) Cruise control/autopilot on, foot on accelerator, no eyes on the road, no hands on the steering wheel. That’s malice. There where visible, audible and even tactile warnings wich this guy ignored.

No current day vehicle (or something from 2019) has in it’s manual that this is use as intended. As a matter of fact all warn you to not do that.

And I get that you hate Tesla/Musk, don’t we all. But in this case only 1 person is responsible. The asshole driving it.

    I use Windows because

My pc does not tell a story. It’s a thing I use for work and play. I can’t be bothered, it doesn’t interest me, what niri, alacritty cosmic de is. Why should I care? Why should I invest that time? My pc works already. My framerates are high, it’s stable and all the stuff I need for work, works. Out of the box.

Every single time I tried linux for the desktop the system failed within weeks. Dependency error after an automatic upgrade. Grub killing itself. Again. X refuses to start. So many config files littered all over the place just waiting for you to fuck something up. Gpu driver bullshittery. Printer hell. Other peripheral shit. (Flightsim gear)

And honestly, the last time i seriously tried was more then 5 years ago. In IT terms that’s a lifetime. So surely it will be much better now.

But after the umpteenth fail to start X, I just thought: wtf am I doing? I could also next next finish my ass through a Windows installation, insert a pihole in my network to block the most obnoxious stuff and just do my thing.

    Which is what I did.

Now, I do use linux. A lot. Just not for my desktop.

  • Point? Like most gifts, there is no point. You just got it.

Thats how I treat my life: as a gift. Because what makes me me, existed as matter for eons. Inert. And by an insane oddity it got “infused” with life, thought, wonder but only for an extremely short while. And after that short period it will go back into that inert state. So i do nice things which are within my reach. Things that makes me feel good. And modern (western) society gives us a lot of time to do that. I know it doesn’t always feel like that but if you look at it historically we have the most off time ever.

Nice things can be anything. Maybe meaningless on the Grand scale of things, but I like making my family happy. I love cuddling my stinky old dog(well, not that old), I hate gardening but love the outcome of it. And yes, I love wasting time on movies, reading, gaming, theater. Or hikes. Or travel in general. The smell of the sea. The feeling of being in a forest. That first time you played “The last of us”. that one specific movie. Or read that one fantastic book. That feeling when you finished it. Or when you went to that insanely funny comedian. Or just hanged out drinking beers (or whatever )with friends or colleagues. Its all fantastic.

And most of the times I like my job and try to forward my little society with it. (I work for a municipality) Within my own little means.

So… meaning? Of life? Experience shit. Make up your own mind.

And please: don’t use big tech socials. They’re made so you don’t feel good, get addicted to them. Get you hooked. It and it’s goals (sell ads!) are evil.

I’ve been inert for eternity. I will not waste that little time I have. Experience something. Anything.

  • Not that guy but another: No. You? Because Microsoft is a lot of things but walled gardens is something out of Cupertino. Not Redmond.

You can call MS shitty and I would fully concur but a walled gardens it’s not.

You don’t need ad, Exchange/outlook, m365, entraid. They’re nice for most users but you can live without and use other services in their place on any MS platform.

Now, iOS… Have fun with that.

  • I somewhat got your arguments. I just don’t feel the same about current day powertoys. They are not needed, don’t add anything useful and don’t work in a lot of setups. Current day powertoys are not what powertoys of the past where.

MS being focussed on the wrong shit to soon: well that has been true ever since the company existed. In the end looking back each and every innovation they did was needed but just years too soon and way too rough around the edges. I Guess we’ll see the same with ai. Some things will stick and be used by others but refined.

  • All the things you say are mandatory are a distraction at best. And hog a lot of resources.

Spotlight run: adds nothing except being a slow down. It’s not that different from the standard search/run box. It just looks nicer. Way nicer.

Fancy zones: does not work reliable on multi monitor/big monitor setup. Useless in my use case. Has been for several years.

Fie renamer: … Really? This is a power tot these days?

Screen ruler: i don’t need rulers on my desktop, i need them in my apps.

Color picker: same. I do not have any use case for it. This is standard app functionality.

Every time i installed powertoys in the last 4/5 years i shrugged, cursed at Fancy zones for not working in my setup and removing it after a few days.

That’s the same usage loop as rainmaker or most stardock tools by the way. Good ideas but fucks up to many things.

The new tabbed shell. (Or not so new anymore these days) Now that is a real powertoy. Or the lnx subsysteem.
