But the joke would only work written, not spoken first contact? Base five we would still say five just the numerals would show 10.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Calls to boycott tech company Stripe after CEO posts about recent visit to Israel
101·1 year agoDude just accidentally visited a beach. A mistake anyone could make. Get over it. I myself have accidentally just walked down a beach which may have been in a country actively committing genocide and I may have had to make the conscious decision to fly to said country and ignore everything about it, and my money may have been helping to fund said genocide and whitewash the actions but like it’s just a minor mistake. Can easily happen. It’s just an accident bro.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•It's easy to imagine yourself withstanding torture in order to save a loved one... until you hit your thumb with a hammer or stub your toe IRL
291·1 year agoI disagree and think this is just perpetuates the mistaken belief that torture actually provides results.
“Everything we know from psychology, physiology, neuroscience, and psychiatry about behaviour and the brain under extreme stress, pain, sleep deprivation, extremes of hot and cold suggests that torture as a method for information extraction does not work — it may produce information, but that information is not reliable. There are also numerous first-hand reports of torture survivors that make the point amply: an individual subjected to torture will say anything to make it stop.”

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was your most and least favorite unit in gym class?
3·2 years agoMost favorite: indoor hockey
Least: swimming. Hate swimming and having chlorine smell all day. Plus it was winter and more than one fire alarm occurred during gym swim period.
If you were around during the early 90s on Usenet you would see a lot of people talking about how Simpsons peaked in season 1. More grounded. More focused on struggling family.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Who do you consider a Great Author of the last 50 years or so (first well-known work after 1970)? I'd like to get a feel for who's who in modern literature. Any language/culture. Fiction only.
28·2 years agoVonnegut is wonderful but his first book is 1950s and his greatest success is likely the 1960s. Question asked post 1970.

4·2 years agoI wish the temperature outside dropped below my house temp. If I run AC at even a money saving 83 degrees inside, the exterior doesn’t drop below that until around 6am.
