  • Personally, for a $20 turntable I don’t think it is worth spending $100 on a headshell that you’ll then need to source a cartridge for, unless you’ve got one of the funky red ones or some sentimental reasons for keeping it. I’d be looking for another deck.

In any case, check the pins in your tonearm against this one

They also have an aftermarket option which is even cheaper on their site.

  • Interesting small format table, I’ve not seen one before but it looks like it was included as part of a minisystem. From what I can gather it has a straight tonearm, so the headshell that you’ve pictured will not work, even if you could find one without the bayonet fitting. Most straight arms will use an angled headshell, and these are often manufacturer specific, so you’ll need to look for a second hand Yamaha headshell, unfortunately.

Here’s one I found, although I’m not sure that spending that much on a late 80s deck that you haven’t been able to listen to is a good idea.

  • My father-in-law is from Burkina, and his family, including my brother-in-law, still live there. The rejection of ECOWAS and the alliance with Mali and Niger is popular, owing mostly to what I’d describe as a general anti colonialist and, particularly, anti French sentiment, which I suppose is understandable.

The article talks about how the countries have rejected French military aid, but the overwhelming opinion I hear from any of the expats I talk with is that the French were only there to protect their mineral interests and provided minimal aid outside of that.

Ultimately, the combined military power of all three nations is not enough to fend off the insurgency. They are further hampered by inter-ethnic conflict, and I very much doubt that Russia will be able to provide any meaningful support, especially for free. This all leads to intense civilian suffering which, in my opinion, requires UN intervention. Unfortunately unless the military junta suddenly reverses its opinion on western influence, this is unlikely to happen.

  • Treating somebody poorly, purely for spite or some form of retaliation, seems like a lot of unnecessary energy to expend on somebody who may not deserve that much space in your mind. The golden rule is not about whether someone has the right to be treated better than they have you, it is about discovering grace within yourself and extending it towards all others.

As to why you should, I could use another turn of phrase- “Lead by example”. You had a poor example in how to extend grace to others in the form of your teachers, and you have the opportunity to be a positive example to others in their place.

  • The vintage market will vary depending on where you are. If you want vintage, try to shoot for the sweet spot between the 70s and mid 80s. Japanese turntables we very reliable and the market hadn’t been overrun with cheap plasticky P mount decks yet.

I’ve bought all of my decks from FB. I try to stick to Japanese decks because that’s what I have experience in, and my current deck is a Technics SL-Q3, with a Q2 as backup. I payed $150 AUD for each of them, both needed a little TLC cosmetically, but are rock solid performers and sound fantastic with a nice cartridge.

The SL-D2 is also a good option and there are plenty around, but JVC, Kenwood, Yamaha and Sony all made good stuff too. Even Akai made a few gems that still fly under the radar so can be particularly affordable.

Audiokarma is your best friend for information, but they will almost always direct you towards vintage rather than buying new.

PS. If you go vintage and want to use the edifers, you’ll likely need a preamp. I have a Project Phono Box E that was cheap enough and sounds fine to my ears, but I prefer to use the built in pre amp in my stereo amplifier.

  • All sorts of stuff. Books, trinkets, records, art. I like to hit up small regional galleries and local artists exhibits for original art, but I also have a lot of prints and posters as well.

Art gallery gift shops are a fantastic place for high quality prints and posters that don’t break the bank, and then you can spend as much or as little as you like on getting them mounted and on display.
