Fix? Not without some eugenics (traditional or modern). Mitigate? We can definitely mitigate it. There was a study recently that showed that it’s not really the punishment for a crime that dieters people, it’s the probability they will or won’t get caught that’s the primary factor. So for instance if there’s a 98% chance they will get caught people are unlikely to commit the crime and if there is a 5% chance they will be caught they are much more likely to commit the crime even if the punishment is extremely harsh. There’s of course a balancing act between personal freedoms and privacy and the ability to catch people aka the more privacy people have the more difficult it is to catch crime and generally the less privacy (and ability to parse large sums of data) the easier it is.

We totally can. It’s just difficult to get past that some people want more than others even if that means harming them.

1·14 hours agoI used their wifi for my place without a Xfinity cable subscription but you could only connect two devices so I used my old phone as a hotspot and that worked for like up to four devices. It was like $10 per month.

1·13 hours agoYou can buy sim cards from Walmart. Last time I was around I was using ultra mobile, although Walmart had their own brand (can’t remember the name). It was $40 no subscription for unlimited talk, text, and data although I think mint now has a similar plan for $30 Link there’s like a ton of these companies, just go to Walmart in the electronics area near the laptops and whatnot there’s a bunch of sum cards and esims you can get with different deals, I’m pretty sure they also sell mint mobile sim cards

2·15 hours agoWhen I’m back stateside I just grab one of those monthly unlimited sims for like $35 and forget about it. Dang, you could probably get away with that $10 Xfinity wifi if you have a voip number although coverage probably isn’t amazing.
When you get to the south west it becomes a place in Mexico which is a place in Spain or straight up just named after a Spanish conquistador.

3·18 hours agoI would have to check out the API for Lemmy to see how easy it would be to make a minimal terminal CLI would be to make. I hate making stuff publicly because I usually only want what I need to work, but I could make a repo and see if anyone else is interested in expanding on it.
It’s more like sugar tea but yes.

10·2 days agoI used to use WebKit based browsers like w3m and terminal based browsers like lynx. Also used a lot of terminal based apps for things, not really for security but because my netbooks single core atom chip sucked. I noticed though that I essentially avoided cookies, ads, and trackers by accident. I’ve been thinking of going back to a thermal based life. Now I’m wondering if there are terminal based apps for Lemmy and mastadon.

7·2 days agoNot me but I’ve known three people now that would swing to absolute extremes on a kinda half year to three year cycle. Like their thing now is they are an ultra atheist and then in a couple months they were the most devout Muslim possible and then ultra this and ultra that, seemed kinda like undiagnosed manic behavior. Very impassioned individuals, pretty intelligent, absolutely convinced in whatever their thing was at that moment, always trying to fight the “enemy” and save the world type stuff but seemingly totally unanchored. The switches would come with some sort of epiphany or a sense they were being tricked or fooled. I bring this up because two of them had done that swing from ultra right to ultra left and then one into kinda political no man’s land conspiracy they’re both out to get you. Haven’t run into the other guy in a while so I’m guessing he has a new crusade by now.
Called someone in the next room to bring me something.
It’s unfortunately still engagement and it feeds the algorithm all the same.

1·3 days agoGood shit. Hopefully you backed up anything important before the switch. Generally good to have backups anyway and use the 321 rule to never lose anything. That’s three copies, two different media (hdd & DVD / cloud), and one copy off sight. Although that may be a little excessive for everyone but it will ensure you never lose anything important.
I usually suggest people shop around / distro hop a little. Get a USB, install ventoy, download a few iso’s and try a few different distros on their live boot. There are a lot of different paradigms for a distro, different user interfaces, different kernel compilations, proprietary driver options, audio driver options, package management options and so on.
That said for someone new it is literally just easier to use a more widely used or common distro, usually there’s better wikis and active forums and it’s more likely someone has already had whatever issue you’re having when trying to fix something. I usually suggest Fedora or Linux mint (lmde). Although with flatpaks and immutable OS’s things are getting easier, more copy paste if you will.

True but one can mitigate engagement. View < comment < like < share < follow and so on (not exactly sure of the order but you get the idea). Maybe the best would be to block the account after following or report the content, that is short of leaving the platform all together.
Any service only cares about engagement so the dislike was never really useful because the core of engagement is rage bait. The only way to truly downvote content is to not engage with it whatsoever. Ex. The only way to dislike Instagram is to not use the platform
