11·2 months agoI would bet on AGI arriving sooner rather than later.
The primary limiting factor right now is availability of power and space. Once small modular reactors start to really take off, we are going to see insane growth in AI development.

110·2 months agoI totally understand the challenges with infrastructure that need solving, but that doesn’t mean AI is useless or that it’ll never be better than it is now.
Frankly, the “AI slop” crusade isn’t working. It’s time to choose a new fighter.

1938·2 months agoPeople are way too pessimistic about AI. NVIDIA is going to sell GPUs by the truckload until research finds a way around CUDA.
Sure, the pace of big leaps has slowed, but I liken this phase to the early 1900s. Cars were slow and unreliable, but once the technology took foothold and the 4th Industrial Revolution really took off, look how much progress was made. We went to the moon by the 60s.

46·3 months agoOpenAI is led by a mendacious, manipulative asshole purporting to be something he is not.
His own board tried to oust him for this reason.
Podcasters in the know allude to the fact that he says things publicly he doesn’t believe, and actually thinks some pretty heinous things about the future of AI.
Tactics like these are further evidence that they know just how bad AI could be for humanity, but they want the most profit they can extract from it before they run off to their doomsday bunkers.
When you see Sam Altman talking, just know he’s not revealing his true thoughts.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•People whose parents have become fascist, how are you dealing with it?
141·3 months agoMy dad was in the military, but I never heard the sorts of things from him that I do now. He has started saying the N word to try to get a rise out of me, thinks Trump is going to “fix” everything, and every time I talk to him on the phone, I can hear fascist talk radio in the background.
We have learned not to bring up politics with each other. The last time I challenged him on it, he said I was being disrespectful, but I don’t accept that. He just thought I was supposed to sit quietly and listen to crazy ranting.
I have learned that in general it’s best to change the subject if someone wants to talk politics who I know I don’t agree with. Most people have gotten the point. We still get along great! We just have polar opposite politics.
Now I know that some people would question why I remain friendly with those people. The answer is that we have more in common than not. Someday, when everyone finally comes to the conclusion that the powerful and foreign are manipulating our political discourse to sow discord, we will finally be at peace again.
And the Rami Malek movie “The Amateur”.

1·5 months agoI haven’t done it myself, but I watch a lot of YouTubers who build off grid with solar power as part of their setup. I’ve found they are a great source of practical knowledge representative of real world performance and challenges.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The solar industry is full of parasites because it's easy to sell solar to uneducated customers
13·5 months agoI will agree with you that the way solar generation for residences is sold is scammy and predatory. This tactics and business models have given it a bad name. However, buying your own setup and installing it? Great technology, 11/10.
