Linux@lemmy.ml•Best way to run Adobe products on Linux? Specifically lightroom.English
63·2 months agoI am not looking for software alternatives.
Ok then
Is the best method still to dual boot?
No, the best method is Windows or Mac…
i didn’t want to do that, so just i changed to Darktable. It’s more ppwerful then LR but that power brings a bunch of differences.

Technology@lemmy.world•What are your technology mispredictions?English
3·2 months agoEverything ? I though MS Office woukd fail becase no one will want to close source their data files, i was using an Amiga at the time at home and the file format was standard and you chose the app to use
It started there and just progressed, Apple was a big one, people won’t buy into their closed wall’d shenanigans. Wrong again.
Messaging, what a debacle that has turned into. I assumed the system would be standardised and the fight would be over the front end for interoperability, wrong again.

If the TV show Whitechapel taught me anything , it’s that human meat does NOT taste like pork.

Technology@lemmy.world•China’s ‘artificial sun’ breaks nuclear fusion limit thought to be impossibleEnglish
151·2 months agoit was one of the most important breakthroughs to date in fusion
What ? It was not really. Here’s a physicist discussing why.
https://dothemath.ucsd.edu/2023/08/fusion-foolery/
In the end, the NIF fusion accomplishment might be called a stunt. Stunts explore what we can do (often after an insane amount of preparation, practice, and failure), rather than what’s practical. Stunts hide the pains and present an appearance of ease and grace, but it’s a show.
The “more energy out than laser energy in” equation masks several fundamental problems. NIF’s doped glass lasers have an efficiency of about 0.5 percent, meaning that they would have sucked in roughly 400 megajoules of energy from the grid in order to produce the 2.1 megajoules of light energy…
To be fair the hype machine was from the press not the scientists
Let’s pause to say: well done! Honestly. No sarcasm. What they did was ridiculously hard, and it finally worked after more than a decade of trying. They actually produced a significant number of fusion events! There’s no faking that, and I’d like to see you try. So let’s be clear that I’m not knocking the accomplishment in itself. My major beef is how we interpret the implications for society.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•One of the most detrimental things to a productive society is when people think their actions don't make a differenceEnglish
73·2 months agoKind of the opposite, it can be depressing recognising the lack of shits given.
Tesla is the most popular car purchase in Norway for eample and is extrmely popular here in Australia. People still use Reddit, X, iMessage, Facebook erc etc. My neighbour uses Stralink when we have a local 400/80 service available. 90% literally don’t give a shit.

2·2 months agoAre you European? If so, anywhere you want, one of the huge advantages of the EU. As an Australian I gave up trying to get into France, other then on a tourist Visa. I am not George Clooney.
If not, you do know you will need a visa and have you checked you qualify before you make your plans ?

Indeed but 0% of them are using Firefox. That battles been lost
Windows from 3.1, MS DOS before that
Come W 8 I was getting grumpy, started dual booting Ubuntu.
Not able to overcome my own apathy, dual boot as in 95% of the time Windows
Come the W 11 announcement some time ago I grabbed another NVME, installed Linux Mint and said fisk it and never went back. Only distro hopped to LMDE haha
Fuck Terminal :)

Linux@lemmy.ml•Recommendations for after installing Linux (Mint) coming from Windows for best practices for a casual user ?English
12·3 months agoDownloaded the App Center (Snap Store) and I was surprised there was even a file saying to not allow it… why is that? Is it not recommended?
Use the inbuilt Flatpack '“store”. Install what you jeed from there. occasionally you wont and you’ll need to dable with the comand line. Installingng .Signal springs to mind
Dual booting with W ? W will fuck up GRUB (your dual booting sysyem) eventually. Run a Windows VM inside Mint instead
I swapped 2 years ago (moved to LMDE eventually from Mint though), and luckly i have no idea wtf I am doing.

3·4 months ago10% are decent, 10% are evil, the other 80% just go along. The 80% are just going along with the latter 10% as long as ot doesn’t impact them directly … and even then the stupid won’t care.

I can’t be assed getting off LMDE, downloaded POP with thoughts of giving it a go but found I can’t be assed getting off LMDE.
On the flip side, I didn’t make it all the way through, i thought it was so bad but then I rate A Clockwork Orange as the worst movie of all time
The solution to that is to delete 130k photos :)
I started culling mine years ago, still wading though
