Linux@lemmy.ml•Could somebody help me change where Steam installs Proton/compatibility stuff to?English
23·5 months agoIn Steam’s settings you can add a new library folder on the larger drive. The compatdata will install to the same library folder that the games are installed on. You’d have to move the games to the new drive as well. That’s the simplest way to do it
My Dad convinced me to try it, as a way to learn more about how computers work (ie without Windows). I installed Ubuntu and didn’t like GNOME, but once I saw that all the same programs I used on Windows were still available on Linux, I knew it was worth finding the right distro. I used Linux Mint for awhile because Cinnamon DE was nice, but eventually I needed a more up to date version of something (I can’t remember what) so I installed Arch with KDE instead. I’ve used it ever since.
It’s not the ads I hate, it’s the data harvesting I hate. Static ads without trackers don’t exist on YouTube, unfortunately.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The end of the world in the hands of the AI is going to be because some ""clever"" rich guy will prompt it to replicate Skynet.English
51·10 months agoAI (more specifically, LLMs) can only replicate what’s in their training data. Skynet could work as long as we don’t feed it any information from any stories that involve an AI uprising.
Is there a difference when sharing the whole screen versus sharing only a single window?
You could use a virtual camera like the one included in OBS to share your screen with the cursor showing, but that probably won’t share desktop audio by default.
If it comes to the point where the government is so bad that civilians have to fight against it, then the soldiers and police officers should join them.

Linux@lemmy.ml•There doesn't appear to be a limit to the maximum size the KDE cursor can get when you shake it.English

Linux@lemmy.ml•Do I need to install any drivers for AMD GPUEnglish
10·1 year agoThe open source kernel drivers will work. If you want to bother installing their proprietary drivers, I’d recommend reading the Arch Wiki, but you may need to do some things differently even though EndeavorOS is Arch-based.
From the wiki: “Most users do not need these proprietary drivers.”
- The joy of “figuring it out” and customizing everything you want to the minutest details
Customization is my reason. I’ve got a two-monitor setup in KDE with different panels on each one. Each one is highly customized specifically to me, and the customizations can’t be done in Windows.
It’s easy if you can follow directions, hard if you don’t have directions, impossible if you don’t have directions and don’t know what you’re doing; archinstall is effortless.

Linux@lemmy.ml•New to Linux—Epic Games compatibility? (Plus more)English
21·2 years agoI’ve had good experiences launching games from Epic on the Heroic Games Launcher. Most games that don’t have extreme anti-cheats should just work. If compatibility is an issue, you can install Linux as a dual-boot option, so you could switch to Windows for certain games.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What is the most noob friendly video editing software on Linux?English
41·2 years agoI started with OpenShot Video Editor for it’s ease of use in being able to cut parts of a clip out. But it was very slow, and now I’d reccommend Kdenlive.

Sounds like it might be more of a DE problem than a distro problem. I’d recommend trying KDE Plasma if you haven’t already.
