New Communities@lemmy.world•[META] Creating a new community is easy, but to get people on board, you need to create some content.English
4·2 years agof I created a community, would I become it’s (lone) moderator automatically?
Yes. But you can also immediatly appoint new mods and/or un-mod yourself if there are other mods present, so it is easy to give a community away when there are other interested users. It’s not a permanent thing.
What consequences, requirements and things would I need to keep in mind as a moderator?
Your community needs to be compatible wih the Fediverse Code of Conduct … but that boils down to “don’t be a dick and don’t post illegal stuff” which is pretty much just common sense. It’s not exactly hard to follow those rules ;)
Apart from that, you can set whatever rules you want. But keep in mind that the Fediverse is still a lot smaller than reddit, so if you are TOO niche / narrow / strict with the rules, you’ll have a hard time finding people who want to engage with your community. General, broad-themed communities with easy-to-follow rules have a bigger chance to thrive.
… and a personal little tip: don’t slam down the ban hammer at every opportunity. As a mod you are able to ban, silence, remove or otherwise “punish” people for bad behaviour, but that doesn’t mean that you have to do that. It’s a lot better to give users the benefit of the doubt, explain instead of punish (as they might not be aware that they did something bad in the first place), and give them a reasonable chance to fix their mistakes on their own before taking action. Post removal, bans and the like should be reserved solely for when the user in question is unwilling to cooperate OR did something obviously super shitty (like threatening other users, using slurs, posting illegal stuff etc.)
Is it advisable to copy-paste content from Reddit to kickstart new communities (given that the link source to the original content was added as well when making new posts)?
Well … as a last resort, yes. Original content or stuff from non-reddit sources is always preferable as it gives users of the Fediverse an incentive to visit communities here instead of going to reddit, but copypasted content is still better than no content at all, so if you can’t find interesting / worthwile stuff elsewhere, then copypasting from reddit is okay-ish too.
OC is still way better tho.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Nowadays if someone said "let's get out the fine china", the meaning could be more broad since almost everything is made in China.
81·2 years agoSame with guest rooms. In my area, almost all “old” houses have a room that is kept neat and tidy but unused until guests come over - basically wasted space specifically reserved for other people not living under that roof. And the boomers here get confused about why newer houses (especially rental appartements) don’t have that oh-so-important feature anymore.
Imagine an entire effing room and everything in it (furniture included) getting the “fine china” treatment and old people being offended that “the youth today” has the audacity to invite guests into the regular boring non-special living room.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Saying you're down to do something means the same thing as saying you're up for it.
12·2 years agoOn the other hand, “knocked down” and “knocked up” have drastically different meanings, which is a little confusing for foreigners sometimes. =P

Just don’t try to recreate nuclear energy at home, kids.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Defederation is just another form of censorshipEnglish
15·3 years agoAfter looking through the comments here, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you just don’t understand what you’re saying, because you seem to be under the impression that “defederating” means that noone that isn’t subscribed to the defederating instance will have access to the content anymore. (e.g. Instance A cuts ties with Instance B and C so people with accounts on Instance B and C can no longer read what is published on Instance A)
This is not how it works.
You can browse all instances without even having an account on any of them so absolutely noone loses access to anything. The only thing you temporarily(!) lose is the ability to WRITE anything on the defederated instance, but you can just make an account there anytime you want.
So when Instance A cuts ties with Instance B and C, people with accounts on A can no longer WRITE anything in communities on B and C, but everyone can still READ everything, and if you happen to have an account on Instance B and want to write something on Instance A, you can just create an account there.
Spending ten seconds on creating an account is not censorship.

New Communities@lemmy.world•Breath of the Wild - a spoiler-free community for BotW
2·3 years agoHonest answer: the official reason for that is the voice acting. It would be weird for characters to call him “Link” in cutscenes while the subtitles say Poopo.
…inofficially, that isn’t an excuse IMHO as there are easy workarounds. Dragon Quest VIII for example had LOTS of voice acting even outside of prerendered cutscenes, but most NPCs had nicknames for the hero. The subtitle might have read “Hey Poopo, how are you?” but the actually spoken line was something like “Hey, my boy, how are you?” …and then there is of course the option to just leave that part out entirely and just say “Hey, how are you?” without changing the subtitle. It wouldn’t have mattered what the player called their avatar then.

… but to answer your question, from totally legit real human to totally legit real human, the links DO work for you and people on the same instance as you (so of course you won’t notice any issues if you check the link yourself), but might cause trouble for people visiting this site from other instances as it will give them the wrong “layout”.
Just an example: people on kbin.social will see your community displayed like this: https://kbin.social/m/bugs@lemmy.world with the kbin layout, interface and functionality. If those people click on a link beginning with “lemmy.world” they will get the layout of lemmy.world instead, which might make it harder for them to navigate the site properly as they’re not used to it.

Triceratops already means “Three-Horned Face” =P It’s just Greek instead of Latin.
