This hurts, I finally decided to build my first own PC like 2 months ago, got everything planned out but decided to wait for black friday to actually order all the parts. Now I have everything except RAM and an SSD, because I refuse to pay those prices 🥲 Maybe I’ll buy a single second hand 8GB stick just to find out whether my system even boots…

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•People that have face/butt labeled towels must do a terrible job washing their butts
7·3 days agoThere’s this youtube video where a lady checks the bacterial density that accumulates on a towel as it is used for several days in a row: https://youtu.be/4NWxU5RIUnI
TL;DR is that it’s completely fine for the first 9 days or so

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something you can see, hear, smell, etc., that others can't?
41·8 days agoThe fucking documentation for the libraries we program with, apparently. Everyone else at work either just vibecodes or goes “aw I don’t know how to do that, it probably can’t be done :c”

Technology@lemmy.world•Devs gripe about having AI shoved down their throatsEnglish
10·19 days agoBecause it’s not fun. Coming up with algorithms and elegant code is the most fun part about programming for me, and debugging pages of sloppy code is the least fun. AI makes the parts I like less fun and increases the amount of sloppy bullshit code I have to debug.

Technology@lemmy.world•Devs gripe about having AI shoved down their throatsEnglish
161·20 days agoI’ve been refusing to use any AI tools at all and luckily my manager respects that, even if he uses AI for basically everything he does. If the company ever decides to mandate it I’ll just have the AI write all my code and commit it with no checks. With the worker’s rights here, it’ll take several months to fire me anyways.
Maybe they should consider flying into Linux instead
Man, you’d think the government would upgrade to Li-Ion Batteries with proper Induction Charging Stations, but apparently they don’t value population surveillance enough to cough up the budget for that. Typical 🙄
I… I hope my passwords are hashed and salted long before they reach the server, so the way it handles unicode shouldn’t affect it all that much. The logistical issue I was seeing with emojis was more that some of them look the same but have different Unicodes alltogether, so typing in the same emoji across devices might be tricky if their keyboards default to different codes.
Hm, now you’re making me wonder how feasible it would be to use Emojis in my passwords…

Technology@lemmy.world•Nearly 90% of Windows Games now run on Linux, latest data showsEnglish
10·1 month agoI finally switched to Linux just a few days ago when upgrading my laptop’s SSD, and so far I have only opened minecraft to see how it runs - extremely smoothly, even though I could not figure out how to make use the Nvidia GPU. I’d say it runs noticeably better on Linux than it did on Windows.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If AI was all it was cracked up to be, it wouldn't be shoved in your face 24/7
24·1 month agoI’ve been wondering about a similar thing recently - if AI is this big, life-changing thing, why were there so little rumblings among tech-savy people before it became “mainstream”? Sure, Machine Learning was somewhat talked about, but very little of it seemed to relate to LLM-style Machine learning. With basically all other innovations technology, the nerds tended to have it years before everyone else, so why was it so different with AI?

Yeah, just hating on iPhones because they’re iPhones is stupid. I use GrapheneOS, and their official statement is “Graphene is your best option for security, but if you don’t want to fiddle with things and be in an open source ecosystem, your #2 best choice is an iPhone”

Technology@lemmy.world•What would stop you from switching to a flip phone (or dumbphone) in 2025?English
1·3 months agoEh, I see no reason to switch to a dumb phone, because I don’t think I’m that bad with my current phone. My main User profile on GrapheneOS is pretty minimal when it comes to apps, it’s mostly messaging, banking, navigation, workout and music (I should probably move Lemmy and Pixelfed to a different profile, but they both have pretty little potential for scrolling for too long since the new content is naturally limited).
The only game on this profile is the one I’m developing as a hobby project lolAll the annoying Apps (Secondary Email, Amazon, Aliexpress, Linkedin, Smartlife, Grocery store coupon apps etc) are banished to a secondary profile that has no permission to run in the background or send any notifications.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemmy users, how do you deal with the current dating sphere? Assuming you haven't found Thee One?
2·3 months agoI agree so much with the intention thing you mention! If someone was flirting with me irl it would either go completely over my head or I’d think they are trying to pull some sort of scam, just because I wouldn’t be set up to expect that they have dating intentions (is that a 'tism thing?)
I met my partner on Tinder in 2018 and we’ve been going strong ever since! Ironically though, it turns out that we literally sat across from each other at the University Cafeteria like a week before we met on Tinder, and we both forgot about it (we each had a friend sit next to us at the cafeteria and our friends remembered each other later). We literally chatted without a single thought about dating, just because neither of us realized that it even was an option!

Yeah, that’s what I’m hoping to do with my system too! I’m not even in a bad financial situation rn, I just don’t really need that PC asap and don’t want to encourage the current market by actually buying at those inflated prices. It’s gonna be a very cool setup once DDR5 RAM goes back to being affordable, but in the meantime it’s just a very expensive adhd pile on my floor xD
