  • I’m not thinking about safety precautions, but about “new(…ish…?)” health and nutrition guidelines for children.

For example: no honey before the age of 1, no raw meat during pregnancy, sturdier/bulkier car seats, and kids wearing bicycle helmets is more or less the norm where I live.

I can’t think of any more examples, but whenever my parents-in-law are visiting, there will inevitably be at least one thing where they scoff at us and say something like, “Ugh, kids these days… We did/didn’t do this or that, and it didn’t harm us, and we turned out just fine…”

  • Although my little fun fact doesn’t apply to THIS flywheel generator, I recently learned, that flywheel generators are used all over Europe to stabilise the Continental Europe Synchronous Area: They are constantly kept spinning and because of their inertia they level any voltage drops and peaks they encounter. Learning this blew my mind because I never would’ve thought that such a simple technology was used to stabilise our electricity grid.

  • Hmm… In my opinion you can’t really compare Balatro and Brotato. You’re right, both games are about making numbers big but the way, they scratch that itch is completely different in my opinion.

Of course the gameplay loops are different and when you’re more into the action oriented approach of Brotato, Balatro just might not be for you, but that’s not my point: In my opinion in Brotato you build your character and when everything goes right you reach a point where you begin to scale and roll and become pretty much unstoppable for the rest of the run. In Balatro you have more RNG caused variance in the main gameplay loop so you might have a rounds where you barely win and rounds where you draw just the right cards and destroy the Blind.

For me, a Brotato run feels kinda more “linear” while a Balatro run has more ups and downs even when going well.

  • I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say it’s by design, but I definitely share your observation that capitalism doesn’t leave much time and energy you would need to pursue hobbies, and it’s way easier to get a dopamine high by consuming.

Even if this phenomenon is not by design, it is definitely synergizing very well with capitalism, and therefore there are people who exploit it and, in turn, support capitalism with their actions.

It is actually a depressing example of Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory, which states that every system inherently tends to stabilize itself.

  • Ugh… There’s this sales / tech guy for this atrocious software I have to use. Everytime I have an issue and report it to him, he’s like “Oh, give me remote access and let me see if I can fix it right away.”

Dude… You have full access to my terminal server and in general the issues I report are not specific to my user account. So please let me work and do your thing without bothering me. When you have a lead and need my input please report back to me.

  • I don’t like the stereotype (and it is just a stereotype) of German being a ‘screamy’ language.

Yeah it’s exactly that: Stereotype and being used to a certain melody in a language. For me (German) Arabic often sounds aggressive for some reason… Farsi and Dari sound pleasent though. I don’t understand neither of them…

Even in Germany we consider some other dialects rude or aggressive sounding. For a lot of people Berlin’s dialect sounds rude or some people from the north have the same feeling with some dialects from the sound. (For me it’s the dialects spoken in the Black Forest).

    Language is weird.

  • NP++ is great but sometimes you want something even more minimal… I for example hate NP++'s icon toolbar and it’s cluttered menu bar and would never use it even though I acknowledge that it’s a great tool (just not for me).

Classic notepad.exe with basic syntax highlighting would be amazing…
