The expression “it takes a village to raise a child” applies here. It’s impossible for a parent to be with their child at all times. Children aren’t always at home, and a lot of parents suck, don’t care, or are just misinformed. YouTube is available everywhere, including at schools and libraries. Look at it like smoking. We recognize that cigarettes are dangerous and cause cancer, therefore children can’t buy them. Social media companies - and let’s stop pretending YouTube isn’t social media, it very much is - are today’s big tobacco. They need regulated, and not doing so is causing tremendous societal harm.

While all of that might be true, YouTube is also a for-profit cesspool of trash content, hate speech, and misinformation. An entire generation of gen z manosphere Nazi bootlickers got where they are watching “gaming videos” on YouTube.
It auto plays by default and their algorithms are dogshit, so you might start watching an educational video with your kid, but end up on a flat earth video fifteen minutes later, or much much worse.
When my son was younger, we severely limited his YouTube time and closely monitored what he was watching on it. Most parents don’t do that.
I dislike legislation like this too, but we’re not talking about PBS or a library here. Kids truly shouldn’t be on YouTube unattended.

24·10 months agoFuck off with this sea-lioning bullshit. The Nazi salute and AFD promotion were international news.
Seriously, what are you getting out of this? It’s like arguing the sky isn’t blue.

This is a deeply unpopular take but it’s the correct one. I caucusef for Bernie in both 2016 and 2020 and the amount of Hilary/Biden supporters to Bernie supporters in both respective years was dishearteningly high.
The only people who show up for primaries and caucuses are predominantly white, Christian heterosexuals of retirement age.
They’re absolutely fucking terrified of anything remotely approaching progressive policy and they’ll never, ever let us run anyone who doesn’t make them feel safe with all their old white money.

21·1 year agoSame. They’ve always done this shit, but installing windows - and then uninstalling or disabling all the cooked-in bloat and spyware - has become so ridiculously tiresome that I just said fuck it and went Linux full-time.
Every update or service pack, it starts all over. There’s no such thing as a clean windows install.
Nobara was up and running in like ten minutes with no fuckery at all, and it’s no nice not having to fight my OS on everything.
Nvidia drivers actually come pre-baked with the installer. When you download the iso, just make sure you get the Nvidia one. It’ll install the most recent drivers for you as part of the install.
I’m running a 4060ti on mine (it was free, I know they’re silly cards) with zero issues.
Nobara is pretty close. Glorious Eggroll’s distro, comes with proton pre-installed so it can run steam games out of the box. Worth a shot, I love it

2·2 years agoNvidia just requires a driver install on most distros, and the newer drivers for Linux run rather well. All but one of my games runs better on Linux than on Windows (MK1 has slowdown issues on cinematics)

1·2 years agoIt’s a lot easier than it used to be. I moved to Nobara (gaming-centric fedora distro that does all the install work for you) maybe two months ago and haven’t been back.
While a few things have required some tweaking, almost everything runs fine out the box and I’ve only had to use the console to troubleshoot one issue so far.
Throw a couple distros on a thumb drive and give one a try

Have you considered self-hosting Plexamp? It supports lossless quality and lets you both steam and download your music at any bitrate you want (even 128 if you really have to, but fuck me that hurts to type.
That’s what I do, and before long trips with spotty service I’ll download a dozen albums or so in flac so I’ve got a decent lossless selection for flights/etc
