Very true, but most commercial software products have a lot of the hand holding integrated, where OSS doesn’t and as a result has a steeper learning curve. OSS developers aren’t interested in software support a lot of the time, quite a few just maintain it as a hobby. See this answer in the Putty FAQ for instance.

Call me a pessimist, but I’ve seen news from German cities or states that switched to open source in the past, and they never stuck with it. The biggest issue with open source is that a lot of time there is no one available to hold the hand of the computer illiterate, which results in failed adoption rates.

I’m Dutch, so we are tough about the Dutch golden age, which spans about the seventeenth century. Trade science and art were at a high point back then, but looking deeper it turns out the life expectancy for common people was lower than in the surrounding countries. The wealth was all concentrated in the Holland province(s), which explains why the Netherlands is commonly referred as Holland in other countries. Another thing was the schism between catholics and Calvinists, which meant Catholic cities didn’t benefit at all from the golden age. It also wasn’t benificial to the 1.7 million people who were enslaved by the Dutch.

So all in all, the Dutch golden age was very much golden for the merchants and aristocrats of cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Leiden or Haarlem, and for the protestant ministers. For the rest, of you didn’t live near these cities you probably were dirt poor.

Billionaires can only exist in a large group of people. I think if a chimpansee (or any other ape) would decide to hoard all the resources of his group for himself, the rest would gang up on him and beat him to either submission or death.

Or the Irish in the Uk, or whoever in whichever country. For me, my family (wife and kids) come first, then my neighbourhood, my village, my minucipality, my country and so on. It’s the same for everyone, which is fine as long as you acknowledge it and act accordingly.
